Web Design Tips

Avoid flashy multimedia. Flashy graphics and multimedia may look nice, but they can make it hard for your visitors to get the information they want from your site, especially when viewing from a non Flash compatible device.

Browser compatibility. Make sure you check your page on Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Chrome and Safari & their different versions. These five web browsers make up about 95% of the world’s browsers. So, test your site out on each of them.

Clean layout. Don’t fill your page up with ’stuff’. White space is good – it enhances the look of your site. Try to keep your content as the focus of your site. Use fonts that will be available on all computers so your page doesn’t end up looking messy.

Design for all screen resolutions. If you design stretch layouts that can fit any screen resolution, you can ensure all your visitors see a visually appealing and professional site. A site that is easy to use and appealing to the eye will encourage your visitors to stay longer.

Exclamation points! Typing millions of exclamation points doesn’t make your statement any more important than if you use just one!!!!!!! See, I told you.

Frames. Don’t use frames. While frames make it easy to have the same header or menu appear throughout the site, the address bar doesn’t change when you go from page to page – making it impossible for someone to link to a specific page.

Grammar and spell checker. Sure, people who are not good spellers will never notice you spelled calender (spelled calendar) wrong but literate people will notice. Try your best to fix up your spelling & grammar.

Hotlinking. Any pictures or music that you link to should be hosted on your own server. Don’t hotlink to other site images – it’s typically considered theft of bandwidth and you could be violating a copyright.

Identity. Ensure your site has a brand identity that reflects your brand values. Try to avoid cliche stock imagery.

Just keep swimming. Don’t give up. Sometimes your ideas won’t work, but just keep swimming. Today people tend to quit or give up too easily. With a little hard work, you’ll find most of your ideas are actually possible.

Keep learning. Stay up to date with news by reading design blogs or try learning a new web language. There is no reason to stop learning about web design just because you’re page is up and running with decent traffic.

Load time. Make sure that your load time is low. In our fast-paced world, we don’t like to wait. I want to see your web page and I want to see it NOW. Try minimizing graphics, flash and scripts as they increase your file size. Also, make sure to optimize your code and delete any unwanted tags or unused scripts.

Minimize clicking. Put as few clicks between your visitor and your information as possible. The more you force your visitors to click around your site, the more you are telling them to go away.

Navigation. Site navigation plays a huge role in determining how long visitors stay and explore your site. If you have an easy to use navigation system, you’ll keep your visitors around longer.

Organisation. The way you organise your content, is as important as what your page looks like, so spend some time on it. If your readers can’t find what they are looking for, they’ll just go look someplace else.

Page length. While you want to make sure you put a lot of information on each page, don’t go too far by putting too much information. If you are posting really long articles, try chunking them into separate pages with six or seven screenfuls to each page.

Quit stealing content. Don’t copy and paste text from another website without asking the site owner for permission. Search engines know if you are copying content and they don’t like it – they’ll lower your page rank without asking any questions.

Readable text. Make sure your text is big enough to read. I know, you’re probably thinking ‘thank you captain obvious.’ Well, I hate to state the obvious, but I am amazed at the number of sites I go to that I have to squint to read. Please, don’t punish me for actually wanting to read your content.

Scalability. Make sure that your design and coding are scalable. Technology is changing rapidly, screens are getting larger (and smaller too), making it hard to test your site on all screens and platforms. Making a scalable site is crucial with the way technology is constantly changing.

Text lines. Learn a lesson from the newspapers. The reason why newspapers print articles in columns is because it makes the lines short and easy to read. So, as a general rule of thumb, no line of text should be more than about 600 pixels wide.

Use contrasting colors. It’s hard to read dark text on a dark background and light text on a light background. I know this tip is obvious, but remember that some color combinations just don’t work.

Valuable content. Give your visitors a reason to stick around. Provide them with valuable content. They’ll be happy and keep checking out your site.

Windows. It’s a good idea to pop up brand new windows for external links – that way your reader can continue reading your content and look at the other site. However, if you are directing them to another page on your site, use internal links. Opening links in new windows means that after five clicks within your site, your reader has six windows open cluttering their screen.

eXplain what you’re linking to. Don’t just put a link in the middle of your article for no reason. Take a second to tell your readers why you think they should click the link. By telling them what you are linking to, you are giving them a chance to decide if they really want that extra information.

You don’t need permission to link. There is no reason for you to contact the site owner asking if you can link to their site. The reason their page is online is because they want to share it. So, if you want to link to a site… just do it.

Windows Application Development or Web Application Development

clock June 13, 2011 02:16 by author Administrator |

Developing an Application for Internal Use

When developing applications for internal use in your company, you often have far different requirements than you do for external applications. Most companies have to undergo computerization processes to achieve desktop standardization to lower their Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). This means that they can control what software is running on the client. Developing Windows-based applications, sometimes called Developing Thick Client applications, often make more sense in an Intranet setting because they can offer a more robust Graphical User Interface (GUI) and better features that increase your employees' productivity. Simple things like keyboard shortcuts, client side caching, multi-threading, and advanced user interface controls can make all the difference in the usability of an application.

Until Microsoft .NET, deployment and updates of a client-side application has traditionally been more difficult, but several features in Microsoft .NET have taken some of the hassle out of managing Thick Client applications. Side by Side execution allows two versions of the same application to run at the same time in separate isolated spaces which makes self-updating applications easier to create. Meta-data has been moved into the application itself, eliminating the need to use the registry, and making installs easier. Microsoft .NET applications can be self-contained so that deployment can be done by merely copying a folder and running the application.

If your application can run with a more limited set of privileges on the client's desktop system, you may be able to take advantage of enhancements in IE 5.01 and above that allow an application to be hosted at a web server virtual directory and run right from a URL. As the application needs additional components, it will return to the same URL to try to download those components as well. Microsoft .NET's tight integration with the Microsoft Windows operating system gives it speed advantages over other client technologies, and allows it to access more features provided by the operating system to help jump start development of client applications that will run on the Microsoft Windows operating system.

The largest hurdles to creating Thick Client applications on the Microsoft .NET platform is the distribution of the Microsoft .NET Framework. This must be installed on client computers that will run your application, but on Microsoft Windows based networks, this setup can be easy to deploy through the use of Active Directory Group Policy. Be aware that developing thick client applications is very different from developing web based applications, and that users have different expectations of them. It is often harder to develop quality user interfaces for a Windowed client versus a Web client, but the results can be much more satisfying for the users and can increase their productivity as well.

Developing an Application for Business Customers

When developing applications for business customers, you may or may not have control over what is run as the client, so this will contribute largely to your decision over whether to develop a Thick Client Application or develop a Web application. To develop a Thick Client application using Microsoft .NET, you will have to able to dictate that your customer's run some flavor of the Windows operating system, and they will have to install Microsoft .NET as well. For most companies this will not be a huge requirement, but others might not want to add the Microsoft .NET framework to their infrastructure support.

In the past, Firewall issues would have been a problem for client side applications, but Microsoft's strong support of Developing XML Based Web Servicesgives client applications the ability to access data in a manner similar to a user browsing the Internet, so that Firewalls are no longer the problem for client applications that they once were.

If these client side restrictions are not realistic for your customers, you may be able to develop a Web application with enhanced client side features if you can dictate that they must be running one of the more modern web browsers, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 8, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. Web applications that ensure a better client browser can offer better features using client side Javascript, but they can still fall short of the features that you can offer in a Thick Client application. If you cannot even dictate the client side browser selection, you will have to code your application for plain HTML to be most universally compliant. This can get the job done, but it means more traffic to the web server and a less than ideal user experience.

Developing an Application for the Masses

If you are targeting your application to the general public, a web application is really the best choice. The proliferation of the web browser has ensured that nearly all of your potential users will have access to a web browser and can run your application. Now you have to decide what level of features you would like in your application and what limits you want to put on your clients.

You can create web applications with more advanced features if you target your application to one of the more advanced web browser like Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Mozilla, but you then must ensure that your clients have one of these. You could target a broader audience by making your web application use more compliant HTML, or you could choose to support multiple versions to give some customers enhanced features and others broader access.

Supporting multiple versions can ensure the best user experience for the most people, but it will increase your development and maintenance costs as well.

Conclusion

There is no single right answer when choosing Windows versus Web, but many contributing factors might lead you to one solution or another. Windows applications have the best user interface and features, but they are available to the smallest audience, while Web applications have the most limited user interface features, but they are available to the broadest audience.

Use some of these determining factors to help select the right platform for you application, but keep in mind that a small application has a tendency to grow into a large application as more people discover its usefulness so keep growth factors in mind as well.

Online shopping trend is fast catching up all across the globe. If you are a jewelry manufacturer or a wholesaler, it is imperative for you to get a website designed in order to reach out to your customers.

You needn't worry if you do not have the expertise with website development. There are many designing companies and professionals who would be more than willing to assist you with your web development needs.

If you are a jewelry merchant, you need to follow few basics for jewelry website design development.

This article will help you to understand the importance of having your jewelry website and the key aspects to follow while finalizing it. Once you get these basics right, you are on the right path toward success. Most of the jewelers have their own websites these days.

So are you ready to get started?

The following tips will help you to make the right decision while you sit down for finalizing your jewelry web development.

Don't cross your budget:

Primarily, you will need to design your website based on your needs and requirements. Make sure that you get it done within your budget. Therefore, it is important that you select the right jewelry web development company for your web development needs.

If your website requires frequent updating, it is important that you do not choose the company which charges you for construction and maintenance on a monthly basis. Working on a flat annual fee might work out better for you.

You'll get hundreds of jewelry web design development companies seeking assignments over the internet for these types of works. If you are working on a tight budget, you could opt to select an Asian web design company which is normally a lot cheaper.

You don't necessarily need to make an expensive and flashy website. It has to be attractive, simple, informative and user friendly.

Registering your domain name:

Once you choose your jewelry web design development company, then the next step is to register your domain name. Most of the webhosting companies provide you with the tool to look for the domain names and extensions which are already not taken.

Make sure that the domain name which you select is closely related to your jewelry business. There are many free keyword tools on the net with which you can get to know about the most popular search engine keywords. This step will help you while you are optimizing your website for the search engine rankings.

Make sure that the domain name which you select is not too complicated. It has to be simple to understand and remember.

Finalizing your website:

Make sure that you convey to your web developer about all the things which you want to include in your website. Make sure you provide all the information related to your products in the website. You could provide your web developer with your catalogue, price range, specifications and other important details. More and more people are moving towards online purchases these days. Therefore, you will need to provide them with all the possible information which they seek.

Please ensure your website has provisions for online payment in order to prevent the delays in your sales. If a customer is unable to make purchase from your website immediately, he or she will leave your website and move over to your competitor's websites.

The other things which you'll need to ensure while finalizing your website are:

1. It should be data driven or content rich website
2. You should be provided with an easy tool to update the prices on individual categories and add new items
3. Option to select different sizes for every item you sell online.
4. You'll need to have your website SEO optimized for improving your search engine rankings
5. You'll need to assign a place for writing testimonials by your customers
6. You need to have a dedicated page for contact or Customer support and feedback

By following the above mentioned steps, your jewelry business website stands a better chance of reaching out to more and more prospective customers.

You can also have an option for your users to customize their products as per their requirements.

40 Simple Ways to Build Trust in Your Website Visitors

clock May 23, 2011 08:26 by author Administrator |

Let me start this article by asking a simple question to you. If you give contract to build your home, to whom you will give? Someone new or someone who is trusted by your close friend or relative? Of course the answer is someone trustworthy person/company by you directly or by someone in whom you trust (your friends/relatives). As you know that 'Trust' is really important in life and that's what exactly I want to mention here to bring success in your website. As a business person, remember this: If people trust you, the revenue will follow automatically!!!

If you want to develop a website for your company, business or product, please contact us http://www.kssoftech.com/Contact_K_S_Softech.aspx

It is absolutely necessary that your website must create the environment of trust otherwise, most of your efforts will be wasted. Have you ever thought how to create the environment of trust for a website? Don't be panic, its very easy to build trust for your online visitors.

As you already know that - you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. Building trust for your online visitors cannot be achieved by just a single action. Trust is achieved by many little actions you do throughout your website and when its taken together, give users a sense of stability, honesty and legitimacy for your business and services you provide.

Another good or bad news is that only few website owners focus on building trust in the minds of their visitors. So, if you do it well, it can become a real and sustainable competitive advantage for your business and you can keep your competitors away.

If you want to develop a website for your company, business or product, please contact us http://www.kssoftech.com/Contact_K_S_Softech.aspx

Here are 40 simple actions you can take to get started.

1. Your website design is the first impression. Make sure it is professional and relevant to the subject matter.

2. Navigation must be intuitive. If visitors can't find what they are looking for easily, they will question your competence in providing what they want.

3. Make the website personal by giving it its own tone and voice. People buy people.

4. Follow the HEART rule of creating online content. (Reminder: HEART stands for Honest, Exclusive, Accurate, Relevant and Timely.)

5. Use language that is appropriate to the audience. It will build empathy.

6. Regularly add new content to your site. It shows that the business is alive and kicking.

7. Review all links. Doubts will quickly form in your visitors' minds if links don't work or, worse still, take them to error pages.

8. Good grammar and spelling matter. Errors give the impression of sloppiness and carelessness.

9. Don't make outrageous and unbelievable claims, like "Read this blog and you'll be a millionaire by the end of the week." People are used to scams, get-rich-quick schemes and rip-offs.

10. Publish REAL testimonials and third-party endorsements. Try to always use real names and link to websites where possible. Some sites show images of letters sent by happy customers.

If you want to develop a website for your company, business or product, please contact us http://www.kssoftech.com/Contact_K_S_Softech.aspx

11. Publish case studies about customers you have helped, who use your product, etc.

12. Don't put down, curse or insult competitors. It's unprofessional. It is better to offer an objective comparison of competitive services or products.

13. Focus on building your long-term reputation, not on making quick sales.

14. Write articles for humans, not search engines.

15. Make your 'About Us' page personal and comprehensive. It plays an important part in making visitors feel comfortable that real people are behind the site.

16. Publish your photo or the photos of the key people involved with the site. Again, this reinforces the fact that there are real people behind the screenshots.

17. Clearly identify who is behind the site. Nothing creates more suspicion than a site that tries to hide the identity of its publishers.

18. On the 'Contact Us' page, provide an email form, telephone number, fax and address of the company. In Europe, it is a legal requirement for sites taking funds, but even sites driven by advertising will benefit from openness.

19. Provide a telephone number that people can call and talk to a person.

If you want to develop a website for your company, business or product, please contact us http://www.kssoftech.com/Contact_K_S_Softech.aspx

20. Provide Web addresses linked to the website domain, not addresses from free webmail services such as Hotmail and Gmail.

21. Think carefully about reciprocal links. If your site is about organic food and you have links to Party Poker, people are going to question your integrity.

22. Think carefully about the adverts you display on your site. Ensure that they are relevant to your subject and audience.

23. Write and publish your privacy policy. Be clear about what you will and will not do with any personal data you collect. State that you adhere to all data protection laws. Make it easy to read and don't use legal gobbledygook.

24. Write and publish a security policy. State what measures you take to ensure that all transactions are secure as well as how well you handle customers data.

25. Ensure that you have a security and privacy policy which is linked from the footer on every page. Make the link more prominent on all the order pages.

26. Clearly publish your guarantee. I would recommend making it a 100% money-back guarantee if possible.

27. Clearly state your refund and returns policy.

28. If you use PayPal, put the PayPal logo on your site. If you have a merchant services account with a major bank like Citibank or HSBC, put its logo on your site.

29. Use Google search on your site for two reasons. First, it is a great search solution which will help your visitors find what they are looking for. Second, having the Google name on your site instills trust.

30 If there are well-known industry associations for your subject, join up and put their logos on your site.

31. Have a forum on your site and respond quickly to questions. Have the attitude that you are happy to help others without receiving immediate reward. As the old saying goes, 'Givers always gain.'

32. Allow people to comment on articles. Interactivity and an exchange of views build community and a sense of involvement.

33. If people provide constructive criticism or comments in the forum, don't delete them, but respond with your point of view.

34. Use the words 'secure website' whenever you try to get any information from visitors, including newsletter sign-ups, forum input and payment.

35. On every page, state, "We take your privacy and security very seriously." Link the statement to the security and privacy policy.

36. If you are selling a subscription, offer a low-cost, entry-level option. This could be a one-day taster, 'a week before billing starts' or a monthly trial.

37. Only ask for information from customers that you really need. For example, for an email newsletter sign-up, the only information you REALLY need is an email address, so that is all you should ask for.

38. If you have pricing on your website, make it transparent. I recently went to buy a book which was advertised for $10. When I checked out, they added tax, post and packaging, and the final bill was $19.50. I didn't buy it as I felt they had deliberately tried to mislead me.

39. Start a small newsletter of your company/services & circulate it among your clients/employees. Also, publish it on your website regularly.

40. Allow people to "unsubscribe" from your mailing list. This may sound very obvious, but I have found that many websites still don't follow it.

To ensure that you are continually improving your trustworthiness, every time you go to a website, ask yourself whether you trust it or not. Then ask yourself why you have formed the opinion you have.

Web 2.0 Concepts to Keep Your Members Coming Back

clock May 23, 2011 08:17 by author Administrator |

Web 2.0 Concepts to Keep Your Members Coming Back Again and Again and Again Web 2.0 may be the most overused, and misunderstood, term of the decade. What it means, in a nutshell is providing a user driven website. Basically many membership marketing websites are Web 2.0, especially social networking sites. The users determine the content in the form of forums, blogs, article posting, reviews and so on. To further enhance the usability of your website and thus the benefit to your members, here are a some ideas to provide a few interactive extras or member benefits.

Training courses are an excellent tool to provide benefit to your members. There are multiple forms for delivering your courses. You could use email - text or html or both, pdf downloads, website content pages, streaming & downloadable videos and audios.

E-mail training courses - Getting your members to sign up for an e-mail training course that takes place over perhaps eight weeks, is a great way of keeping your members engaged with your site over a period of time. You could make this a free course, a paid course or both. Maybe give them a few lessons for free and ask them to pay for the rest of the course once they are into it.

However, to get maximum exposure giving away an entire course or even multiple courses of good quality for Free will really get people coming back to your site. We do this with some of our own membership sites including MembershipMillionaire.com.

Video tutorials - This is a very effective form of training as it is much easier to show your members what you are doing, rather than trying to explain it. It prevents your students becoming frustrated when they can understand what you are explaining, and reduces misunderstanding.

You could do the videos yourself using software or you could hire experts in video creation if you are not comfortable using software or doing videos. You could do simple power point slideshows and narrate them or you could stand/sit in front of the camera and talk.

With many Internet users on broadband or ADSL nowadays and computer processors getting faster and faster videos are now going mainstream.

Teleclasses - Teleclasses are similar to conference calls and are conducted over the telephone. They are an excellent way for your members to take part in live learning, as well as having personal interaction with you and other members of your site.

There are many services out there that provide teleconference lines for you to use. Some are free and some have paid services, you should decide what is best for your business needs. You could even record your calls, have transcripts made and then sell that as another product in itself. To top that off you could offer reprint or resell rights to those calls and sell licenses.

Product reviews - Reviews posted by other members is a fantastic interactive medium. It could also engage heated discussions! Nothing gets traffic faster than controversy whether good or bad. Let your members speak their mind about products and services they've used. This will not only help other members and visitors out but it will add lots of content to your site that the search engines love. Sites such as Amazon.com, SureFireWealth.com and others do this on a regular basis.

Guest interviews - Guest interviews with a well known personality who is connected with your niche subject will add huge credibility to your site. Promote guest interviews on your website and in your newsletter. This is a quick way to get great content.

You could post the interview on your site as website content. Or you could have the streaming audio or video up and even let your members download the interviews. Let them post reviews and comments to the interviews and you've got even more content.

Forums - Forums are a type of virtual community and provide the opportunity for people with similar interests to talk to each other. Your members will already have a shared interest in your niche subject, so creating active discussion forums wont be too challenging.

Here's a tip, have good forum monitors and admin in place to keep things smooth. Having multiple monitors can help you get your new forum started as well as keep discussions ongoing. You could keep your forums open to everyone. That will be better for search engine traffic but it can also attract spammers and forum hackers. Having a private forum for your members only can keep things more secure and full of like minded individuals.

Competitions - Encourage your members to post on your forum or blog by running a competition. Award a prize each month to someone who has made the best post on your forum, and each individual posting would be an additional entry into the prize draw. Or maybe give a prize to the member who writes the most reviews or posts the most comments each month to your site.

Involving your members in polls and surveys

Member polls - Asking your members to answer a simple question relating to your niche subject is a simple and effective way to get them involved in the site. Have a regular monthly poll and publish the results of the previous months poll above the question for the current month.

Surveys - Some niche subjects lend themselves well to surveys. If yours does not you could conduct a survey about your membership site itself. This gives your members the chance to express their views and let you know what changes they would like to see.

Getting feedback can also let you know where to take your membership site. By allowing your members to tell you what they want you can just simply give it to them. We've taken surveys ourselves over the years and they can be very insiteful. The poll or survey data you generate can be gold to your customer feedback system for the future of your business.

Newsletters - Newsletters may be used to highlight forum posts, questions that people have asked, blog posts and even case studies, survey results, success stories and more. Get your community involved in the content both online and in your newsletter. They'll be invested in the results. We'll get more in depth about newsletters in another article.

For now I hope these gave you some ideas to get going with.

ASP vs. PHP - Which one is right for you

clock May 21, 2011 12:32 by author Administrator |

Too many acronyms!
With all of the acronyms floating around the Web genre, it's difficult to keep track of the new (or old for that matter) technologies. But there are two acronyms that stand out in today's Web design vernacular more so than any others do. ASP and PHP are different approaches to building dynamic Web sites that can incorporate database interactivity and other application server uses into your Web site.

ASP stands for Active Server Pages and PHP formerly stood for Personal Home Pages and is now known as PHP Hypertext Preprocessor.

The breakdown!
ASP is a toy from the Microsoft development toy chest and is used with "Internet Information Server" (IIS) which is a program that runs on Microsoft servers. ASP is generally not supported beyond Microsoft servers. However, there are 3rd party applications that can make it compatible with a few other servers. ASP is widely used for large companies Web needs.

Rasmus Lerdorf originally designed the PHP parsing language during 1994/1995. Some other major contributors were Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans who rewrote the parsing engine to create PHP version 3. The major NT and UNIX Web servers support it and it is widely used with the mySQL database. Small and medium Web developers use it religiously.

Do you need either one?
The need for either of these Web development tools is derived from the inability to control the end-users computer. In other words Web developers India don't have control over what applications their site traffic may or may not have on their user system. Does a client have Access Database or SQL? Does the client have Microsoft Word or Corel Word Perfect? If your site is going to incorporate "on-the-fly" Web page design that will include database, word-processing and other application data, a developer has to know exactly what apps will be used to generate Web content. The best way to control this is to have all content generated on the Server instead of the client.

Server Side Scripting is the way today's Web pages are run. Static Web sites Development India (no dynamics) that just have information and no interactivity with server programs are becoming less of the norm. It is no longer a huge financial burden to pull off dynamic content. There are many free servers that allow you to write scripts to the server and you can run a full throttle business class site with just a small financial contribution each month using some of the more sophisticated Web hosting packages offered by today's Web space hosts. The real question is, which dynamic program do you want to use.

The learning Curve! ASP
http://msdn.microsoft.com/

ASP is not a straightforward program that can be picked up from scratch easily. However this is typical of a Microsoft application. The major reasons that large companies are running it instead of PHP include the following 3 important factors.

  • Microsoft products are all over the globe and it makes their site compatible with a significant number of other big businesses sites. This makes business to business transactions easier because everyone involved is running the same platforms and applications.
  • Large companies already have their computers running Microsoft products and their employees are trained in the Microsoft program environment. This keeps training investments down to a minimum and keeps companies from investing in new equipment and software. They get to milk their current Microsoft product assets for all that they are worth.
  • If a large company wants to take over another (an acquisition or merger) or is bought out themselves, the ability to easily integrate systems (databases, document processing, spread sheet and accounting applications) is invaluable and can make a company appear to be a much more attractive prospect to potential benefactors. Therefore keeping your business dressed up in MS clothing can have a certain appeal.

There are many small and medium business that choose to run ASP as well. Most of these already were using NT, Excel and Access. Using IIS (Internet Information Server) to access their spreadsheet, database and word-processor applications to incorporate data into Web content is an easy transition.

Trying to incorporate existing Microsoft application data into a PHP run Web site would require starting from scratch with a great deal of headaches including purchasing new programs. Therefore some small and medium sized businesses that already are hooked on Microsoft products may opt for ASP as well.

However PHP is the developers tool that has gained the most respect amongst Web gurus and aficionados. Most describe it as an easy to use and feature packed program that allows you to create dynamic and database driven Web sites effortlessly. It is a free program that is open source so it can be modified to fit developers needs. Most developers who like Linux and mySQL are also fans of PHP.

The learning Curve! PHP
http://www.php.net/

Independent Web developers as well as a growing number of small and medium sized businesses love PHP. They have jumped onboard the PHP bandwagon and love every trail they blaze. What are the secrets behind the rapid growth of PHP and what are the advantages to using this highly regarded program?

  • It's easy to learn and the available support for it is through the roof. The Web has always been about individuals banding together to create resources for one another. PHP is loved by the Web community and you will find and abundance of tutorials, tools, Web sites and other online support ready and available to guide you from your Web sites conception to it's launch.
  • More and more host servers are supporting PHP; chances are you can find a good free or cheap host for your site that will allow you to run a dynamic PHP site.
  • ASP is supported by Microsoft servers only (unless you use a 3rd party utility that facilitates support); however, PHP is supported by many different "html" servers.

What else separates the two?
PHP has it's own language and syntax, the language is simplified due to the programs incorporation of a parsing engine that is especially designed to make short work of translating PHP code into machine language that executes commands.

ASP makes use of a language that was dying before Microsoft managed to breathe new life into it. Visual Basic Script is the language used in ASP and was formerly used (and still is used by some developers) as a client side scripting language that was in direct competitions with JavaScript. This was back when Internet Explorer was still the #2 browser behind Netscape Navigator. During this era, JavaScript was whooping the pants off of Visual Basic Script with its wide acceptance amongst Web developers.

However client side scripting languages were an invention of necessity and thrived in an era when Web hosting was an expensive operation and paying for server script access usually meant writing in CGI (Common Gateway Interface) languages like Perl that were difficult to learn. But these obstacles no longer exist. Today it's far too cheap and too easy to use ASP or PHP to create a dynamic site. There's no reason to be limited to only client side scripting.

Nevertheless, Microsoft was able to keep yet another product afloat by ingeniously (cough...cough) using it as the language catalyst for getting the IIS to generate dynamic web pages.

Are there any other alternatives?

JSP
http://java.sun.com/products/jsp/docs.html

(Java Server Page) is an extension to the Java servlet technology pioneered by Sun. Like ASP and PHP it provides a simple programming vehicle for displaying dynamic Web content. JSP is the Sun/Java attempt to compete with Microsoft's ASP. JSP is not widely used however it has a small core of enthusiasts who are claiming it to be as powerful and dynamic as ASP. These patrons usually fail to even acknowledge the PHP genres existence (probably because PHP is far more popular than JSP).

ColdFusion:
http://www.allaire.com/products/ColdFusion/whyuse.cfm

ColdFusion is an application development tool created by Allaire Corporation. It is used for writing Web pages that interact with databases. ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML) makes use of HTML-like tags that are embedded in the Web pages. ColdFusion uses an engine (like PHP), which interfaces with a Windows-based Web server (obviously an attempt to make good use of the huge client base afforded to Microsoft). However this would explain the reason it's not as popular as PHP amongst the anti Microsoft genre.

The verdict!
Which one you choose is based on many variables but none more important than preference. When people visit your site they won't say, "Man, this page was generated by ASP; that sucks!" What they will do is evaluate the site's usefulness based on design and content. Therefore as long as your site follows the rules of good design and also provides the content that the client was looking for any of these dynamic content tools will work just fine, so take your pick.
